I think the game is better for having them because its really fkin scary slowly traversing through Dark Bramble but once that appeal wears off it becomes a nuisance. Normally when I see a loading screen I pull out my phone or divert attention elsewhere and leave the world the developer wants me to be immersed in. I always thought I didn't mind loading screens but by Outer Wilds not having them, it became clear to me how incredibly disruptive they are. And if you overreach, you start the next loop smarter. You feel that you're a part of a harsh universe that exists independently of you, you're only there to observe and learn. There are so many times where I ended up shouting because I was so engaged and something surprised me. Going to a new planet for the first time is exciting and sometimes terrifying. So many games are plagued by the fear that people will get stuck and lose interest so they go too far implementing hand holding and quest markers that ruin the feeling of discovery.Įvery location is unique, interesting, and atmospheric. And its directionless approach makes it so that its deeply rewarding to piece things together because no one held your hand or told you what to do, you figured it out on your own accord.

For that curiosity to exist the world and story have to be interesting and Outer Wilds is remarkable in its ability to make the player want to learn. It takes a great deal of confidence in the story and exploration to do this because the only thing motivating the player is their innate curiosity.

One of the things I appreciated the most about Outer Wilds is the developers made the choice to have no progression system whatsoever. Matthewmatosis talks about how so many games employ RPG style progression systems and how common it has become. You only get to experience a game for the first time once and Outer Wilds taught me its so much more rewarding to learn and discover independently. I'm so glad I chose this approach and it has changed how I play games from here on out. I have the problem where I look things up when I'm stuck and research games before I play them but with Outer Wilds I decided to go in totally blind and stay blind.
